I was diagnosed with celiac disease about 6 years ago. Since then, I have to follow a lifelong strict gluten free diet. But nowadays, it kind of started to be a trend to go gluten free… So, I decided to write a whole post about Gluten and about the reasons why to go gluten free and also give some information about the meaning of the celiac disease.
So first of all, Celiac disease is the most severe form of gluten intolerance. In fact, it is an autoimmune disorder, and involves the body treating gluten as a foreign invader. The immune system attacks the gluten, this damages the gut wall, and may cause nutrient deficiencies, anaemia, severe digestive issues and an increased risk of many diseases. So, people who are “celiac” do really have a serious disease and the only way to prevent this disease or in this case, the symptoms, to get worse, is to follow a lifelong strict gluten free diet. In my case it took me about 3 years to feel better again and to see all my symptoms disappear. So if you started a gluten free diet and can’t see any results yet, then be patient because it may take a lot of time. Your body needs time to recover.
There are also people who have a gluten sensibility, also known as a non-celiac gluten sensitivity. That means, they may react negatively to gluten. For those suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), or have some digestive issues, avoiding gluten can also help reduce the symptoms. So, whatever the reason is why you are avoiding gluten, the most important thing is to stick strictly to it. I know it is very hard, and it can feel very frustrating while waiting to see the first positive results but, you need to be patient. It is also important to talk with someone about how you feel. Celiac disease and also IBS, can both be the reason for a lot of symptoms, which can be very hard to live with, including depression, so if you need to talk to someone but don’t have anyone to talk, just message me and feel free to ask whatever you want to ask.
If you decide to go gluten free then you need to know that gluten can be everywhere! It’s so crazy how many foods can contain gluten. Even those, you never thought of. What I do, is that I always read the ingredients list of every single item I buy. That is the number one rule! If you aren’t sure if any food could contain gluten, then you have to avoid to eat it. You can’t take any risks. Even a very small piece of gluten can reactivate your immune system to react to the gluten and restart all the symptoms. So take all the precautions you need to take.
